Security on the Internet is a very important topic these days. I was evaluating different firewall programs for my Windows XP PC when I came across a free offer from Webroot. Webroot is giving away their desktop firewall program for free. The program is worth $19.95 but it is free for now. The program can be downloaded at

I ran the program on my Windows XP machine and put the program through its paces and it works pretty well. It blocked most ports while I was surfing. This program uses up more resources than my D-Link firewall router but hey, it is a Windows program. It is free so its features are more basic than say McAfee's firewall product. But all in all, Webroot's desktop firewall program is ideal for computers or offices that aren't heavy users of the internet or that don't have a hardware firewall available.
